I know you are very excited to go on your next trip. You have probably been daydreaming of this trip since you planned it. I get that feeling every time I have an upcoming trip. You have packed everything and are set to just take off. During all this excitement many of you might not even think about the importance of travel insurance, will you?
I know you wouldn’t because I had the same mindset as you and I never even thought anything about travel insurance during my first year of travel.
I realized the importance of it during my second year of travel as I started following more and more travel blogs. They have mentioned many things which went wrong during their travel and how travel insurance covered them.
Many people are still going to think that it is a waste of money and there is an 80% chance that nothing is going to go wrong during their trip.
Yes, true, but what about the 20% chance of something going wrong which is not in your hand. Some natural disasters, or any accident, or your things getting stolen. You should never ignore this 20% possibility.
Down, below I am going to give you 11 situations which will tell you the importance of travel insurance.

11 Situations That Will Tell You The Importance Of Travel Insurance
Yes, there are many instances where people lost their baggage or sometimes their baggage gets delayed. And trust me being stuck in another country without any baggage or your essential things is really a very painful experience.
This is where your travel insurance kicks in and it makes sure you don’t have to be alone and stranded. Your travel insurance will cover you if your baggage gets stolen or even delayed for more than 12 to 15 hours.
Getting Sick Overseas.
This one reason is enough to make you realize the importance of travel insurance. The last thing you want to do on your trip is spending your adventure money on your medical bill overseas.
You need to understand that health insurance and travel insurance are two different things. This means you won’t be covered or any pre-existing medical conditions. They only insure you if anything happens to you during the trip.
Injured During Adventurous Activities.
There are many travel insurance which covers you for your adventurous activities. As the travel rate is increasing the insurance companies try and make the travel experience easy for travelers. They are including more and more activities in their plans so you can just stop worrying and enjoy your trip.
There are a few limitations as well as far as the travel insurance for activities is concerned.
For e.g. World Nomads give you travel insurance for Kayaking but they won’t cover you for any extreme conditions of the river.
You can check out their post here. – World Nomads Kayaking
Trip Cancelled Due to Medical Reasons.
Another instance of getting sick/ill. The only difference in this and the previous one is that you fall sick before your trip. Now, you have already paid for your flights, accommodation, and other expenses before your trip.
If you are anything like me, you also love to book things with the cheapest rates. As a budget traveler, I always look for the cheapest fares. This is the first step in my budget travel planning.
The only downside of this is that most of the fares are NON-REFUNDABLE.
In such situations, the travel insurance would cover you up and you wouldn’t have to worry about all your prepaid expenses.
Things Got Stolen.
There are natural disasters and then there are man-made disasters like stealing, robbing, etc. They happen to you at any time and things can be very stressful if such a situation happens with you.
With the inclusion of the lost and delayed baggage travel insurance companies also cover you up if things get stolen.
If you buy travel insurance make sure you read the terms and conditions properly as to how much they reimburse you in such a situation and what are the things you cannot claim if such a situation happens to you.
People have claimed more than $800 during such incidents.
If you are traveling in a country where there have been many terrorist activities then don’t go to that country without your travel insurance.
I know you will say that you will never visit that country if terrorist attacks are happening there. I know, and nobody will visit a country in such situations.
But, what if you already paid for your trip, what if you plan your trip 6 months earlier and such things happen after you plan your trip. In such a situation you can cancel your trip and claim your insurance.
I don’t think I need to explain this one. As I told you about the man-made disaster above, this also happens very often. The only difference is that those man-made disasters happen more frequently than these natural disasters.
If you get injured in such situations, the company will cover up your medical bills and you won’t have to worry about the hospital expenses you will need during your trip.
Stolen Credit Cards.
Pickpocketing is a very common thing. This is not only just in the international destination but also in your local area. I can’t do anything about the local area, but if your card gets stolen during your trip you won’t have to worry about it anymore.
Many companies can cover you in the following situations.
- The cost you will need for replacing your credit card.
- Credit Card Replacement Fees.
- If you need any transportation to the credit card authority during your travels.
Your Tour Company Requires Travel Insurance.
Nowadays many tour companies ask you for travel insurance if you are planning an international trip through them. This might also be a new way of selling you the travel insurance if they are tied up with any travel insurance companies.
Now, I won’t say that they might be scamming you. But make sure you pay the right price for your travel insurance. If you ask me the right price to pay for your travel insurance would be around 7 – 10% of your total prepaid expenses.
That would the right price and if your tour company is trying to give you a higher price then don’t buy it from there. If you are unsure about the price, you can enter your travel details below and get a quote for your travel insurance.
Travel Insurance For Your Visa.
This is not a need but a kind of necessity. Some Visa application wants you to have travel insurance for the entire length of your stay.
For e.g., Schengen Visa Requirements.
Applicants for a uniform visa for one or two entries shall prove that they are in possession of adequate and valid travel medical insurance to cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital treatment or death, during their stay(s) on the territory of the Member States. The insurance shall be valid throughout the territory of the Schengen Area Member States and cover the entire period of the person’s intended stay or transit. The minimum coverage shall be EUR 30,000”
Just for The Heck Of It.
Just to be sure, just to have peace of mind. There is no point in stressing about anything happening on your trip. If you are the kind of person who stresses things quickly and can’t stop thinking about these various scenarios, then you might as well buy travel insurance and enjoy your trip.
That would be it for today’s blog.
I hope you got a fair idea about the importance of travel insurance.
