How to get from Kuala Lumpur airport to Kuala Lumpur city

Kuala Lumpur Airport to Kuala Lumpur City

Sharing is caring!

Traveling from any airport to the city center is quite confusing for many people. The reason behind this is every airport has different ways of connecting to the city. Some airports have a lot of public and private ways while some only have taxi services. This article will give you detailed information on how to get from Kuala Lumpur airport to Kuala Lumpur City.

The most commonly used airport in Malaysia is the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. There are two terminals in this airport, KLIA, and KLIA2. The only difference you need to know about them is that KLIA is the main international terminal. Whereas the KLIA2 is the one from which the budget airlines operate.

E.g. If you are traveling from Mumbai to Kuala Lumpur on Malaysian airlines then you will be arriving at KLIA terminal. Whereas arriving in Malaysia on AirAsia airlines will take you to KLIA2.

Transfer Between KLIA and KLIA2

Both the terminals are not very far from each other. They are just 2 to 3 km away from each other. Traveling between these two terminals is also quite easy and convenient.

There are three possible ways you can do this.

  1. Airport Liner Bus
  2. KLIA Ekspres
  3. Free Shuttle Bus

Airport Liner Bus

This bus operates from 5:30 a.m. to 11:50 p.m. everyday. It takes around 10 minutes to travel from one terminal to the other. You will find this bus at platform no. 10, 11, 12 at the KLIA bus station. At the KLIA2 you will find this bus at the KLIA2 transportation hub.

Cost – RM2.50 (Rs.45)

KLIA Ekspres

This is the fastest and the most convenient method to transit between the two terminals. It will only take you 3 to 5 minutes to travel from one terminal to the other. They operate from 6:00 a.m. to 11:10 p.m. everyday.

Cost – RM2.00 (Rs.36)

Free Shuttle Bus

One thing you need to know about this is that it is not available for everyone. You can only ride this Free Shuttle Bus if you have interconnecting flight between KLIA and KLIA2.

Also, before riding this you have to show your tickets and book your terminal transfer at the counter. This ride will also take you around 10 minutes.

You can find this Free Shuttle Bus in KLIA at Level 1 near Door 4 and Level 1 at bay A10 in KLIA2.

Kuala Lumpur Airport to Kuala Lumpur City

Kuala Lumpur Airport

There are two main hubs in Kuala City you will want to travel.

  1. TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan)
  2. KL Sentral

Don’t get confused, I will explain to you what route you should take. If you want to do interstate travel to places like Penang, Langkawi, Johor Bahru, Malacca, etc. then you should come to TBS. Traveling to Kuala Lumpur city will be convenient from KL Sentral.

Kuala Lumpur Airport to TBS

You can get to TBS from Kuala Lumpur Airport using the following ways.

  1. Jetbus
  2. KLIA Transit
  3. Taxi

Jetbus from Kuala Lumpur Airport to TBS.

It is the most trusted company when it comes to providing an efficient and affordable way to connect you from the airport and the city. They operate every hour from 4:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the KLIA2 terminal. The journey takes around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.

You can purchase the tickets at KLIA2 Level 1 from the KLIA2 transportation hub.

KLIA Transit from Kuala Lumpur to TBS

This is the fastest public transportation route you can choose. The journey from KLIA2 to KLIA takes around 30 minutes. You can choose this route if you are in a hurry or you prefer to travel via rail. The only downside of this is this route can be a little expensive.

The stop which you need to get off for going to TBS is Bandar Tasik Selatan. After getting off at the station the TBS bus stop is just 3 min walk away. The frequency is around every 20 minutes.

Taxi from Kuala Lumpur to TBS

As always, the most expensive route you can choose to travel. The travel time is around 40 mins. Being a budget traveler, I have never used this route for traveling to the city from the airport. I am just mentioning it for those who want to use this route.

This route has three popular ways to travel similar to the TBS route.

  1. Aerobus/Skybus
  2. KLIA Transit
  3. Taxi

Bus from Kuala Lumpur to KL Sentral

The most popular bus operators from Kuala Lumpur airport to KL Sentral are Aerobus and Skybus. The journey takes around 1 hour 15 minutes using any of the bus operators. This is the favorite option for budget travelers.

Cost – RM11 (Rs.195)

KLIA Transit from Kuala Lumpur to KL Sentral.

The train which I mentioned for traveling to TBS is the same train you can take for traveling to KL Sentral. The journey will take you around 35 minutes.

The station you will be getting off is KL Sentral.

Taxi from Kuala Lumpur to KL Sentral.

One thing I want to mention about Taxis is that you should always opt for a metered taxi if you are booking one outside the airport. If you are booking one at the airport then the most popular service is the Airport Limos.

Cost – RM80 to RM100 (Rs.1400 to Rs.1800)

After reaching KL Sentral you can continue your journey to whichever place you have booked your hotel. One interesting thing you should know is that there are free buses all over KL City which will take you to the most popular places. One of these buses has a starting point from KL Sentral. If you want to know more about them. Check out this article.
